Zuma shows ANC champions the poor

Feb 12, 2012 | Reader Review | 0 Comments

WHEN President Jacob Zuma was asked on the Business Breakfast TV show what keeps him awake at night he unhesitatingly stated that it was the plight of the poor and what could be done to undo their poverty.

This is exactly what we want to hear and see happening from a president who has the support of organisations like the Communist Party and Cosatu.

It is inspiring that the president not only promised to do the necessary to root out poverty, but first reviewed, in the state of the nation address on Thursday night, his previous promises on the issue and clearly there has been delivery on same.

There was no rhetoric since, when reviewing the recent statistics on poverty reduction, the statistics spoke for themselves.

Also, the R1bn fund that has been set aside for poverty reduction which will start operating in April, coupled with the R83000 housing subsidy for those earning between R3500 and R15000 [a month] to enhance access to loans, is a clear sign that the ANC is now firmly on the side of the poor, and unapologetically so.
