Disparity reigns

Feb 5, 2012 | Reader letter | 0 Comments

WALKING the dusty streets of Khotsong township, next to Bothaville in the Free State, I am drawn to a newspaper article where white people, led by AfriForum, are carrying placards complaining that they are being short-changed by universities.

WELL-HEELED PROTEST: It's not for the previously advantaged to complain as long as the legacy of apartheid remains

Then I ask myself why people living in plush places, who clearly used their cars to attend their picket could keep complaining as if they are unaware of this country's rough history.

Don't they know that black people were denied education rights since apartheid took root?

So they think only seventeen years can undo a centuries-old bad tradition? Don't they know that to balance the scales the part which previously enjoyed lots of weight must necessarily lose some weight?

Are they aware that we still face the legacy of apartheid in the form of streets that still bear the names of apartheid stalwarts - the name "Bothaville" speaks for itself - and every day we are reminded about the painful past.

On top of that, as they picket for university space we still do not have tarred roads and access to clean water like them.

Let them wait for us, the black race, to catch up with them so we can then move forward together.
