Stars beat Stars
Dove Wome struck in the first half as Free State Stars kept their slim Premiership title hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Both sides had their chances on goal, but the Free State side, under the watch of coach Steve Komphela, were more clinical.
The hosts came into the game fresh off a 2-1 victory over title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns, while Free State were in desparate need of points after playing to a draw at home against Black Leopards.
Mzikayise Mashaba had the first opportunity for Free State Stars in the 10th minute, with a left-footed attempt across goal just drifting wide.
Six minutes later the home side put the ball into the back of the net, thinking they had taken the lead, but it was disallowed for offside.
Edward Manqele was on the end of a perfect cross that left him one-on-one with Jackson Mabokgwane in the Platinum Stars goal midway through the first half, but he directed his shot straight at the keeper.
Seven minutes before the break, however, the visitors got the breakthrough when Wome put them ahead.
Free State launched a quick attack before Wome was released down the left and his close-range effort was rifled into the back of the net.
Two minutes after the break, Patrick Malokase signalled the home side's intent with a shot from close range that just shaved the crossbar.
Mashaba had a chance with a little more than half an hour left, but he saw the strike drift narrowly wide of target. The visitors pushed hard to double their lead, but they could not convert.
The hosts threatened at times for an equaliser, but nonetheless went down in their 12th loss of the season.
