Chasing the magic number
WHAT will the magic number be to win the PSL this year - 59, 60 or 63?
How many additional points will teams get out of a possible 90 in the second stanza?
The winning points total in 2011 was the highest in the past four seasons. In 2010, SuperSport needed only 57 and in their three successive league titles under Gavin Hunt they won the league for the first time with 54 points in 2008 and just 55 in 2009.
Mamelodi Sundowns won in 2007 requiring 61 points. That was a successful defence for the Brazilians, who also won it the season before (2006) with 57 points.
The last time Kaizer Chiefs won the league, they did so with 62 points - the highest in recent times - and were two points clear of arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.
Some of the Premier League coaches were willing to stick their necks out ahead of Wednesday's big kick-off and put down a marker for the second half of the season.
Hunt says 60 is the number.
"I think 60 points will win it for us," said Hunt and he should know.
Gordon Igesund, who has brought Moroka Swallows from also-rans last season to potential league champions in 2012, had two stabs at an answer: "I think 59 or 63 points will do it for any championship-chasing side."
Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic went for the higher number: "I think 63 points will be enough for the team to win the league this season."
Pirates coach Julio Leal believes it will be just over 60 points.
"We want to collect as many points as possible. Pirates won it on 60 points last season and I think we can go beyond that this time around," he said.
The magic number was indeed 60 last season, but it needed goal difference to separate Pirates from Ajax, who finished on the same points.
Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens was philosophical: "All I know is that you need to have more points than all the other 15 teams."
Wits coach Roger de Sa said: "I think 60 points will do for the winners.
"But I don't think we can win the league."
