Beneficial hostility - Stars traverse Tshwane soccer divide

INTENSE rivalry has characterised derbies between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United as their battle for the "Tshwane Giants" tag has become more intriguing, uglier and nastier over the past decade.

Perhaps the ugly and nasty side was best demonstrated by a touchline scuffle between then Sundowns' Angel Cappa and his United counterpart, Pitso Mosimane some six years ago, when emotions got the better of the two coaches.

Yet despite the antagonism, a weird relationship has inadvertently been fostered by the transfer of players between these arch-foes, if not by their equally strong determination to dominate the league championships.

The relationship between the two Tshwane sides has seen as many as 14 players switch allegiance across the capital city, as both Matsatsantsa a Pitori and the Brazilians go about their respective perpetual struggle towards PSL domination against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Anthony Laffor, who has been hankering for a move to Chloorkop, officially joined the Brazilians on Thursday after protracted negotiations that involved the transfer of winger Franklin Cale, strikers Mabhuti Khenyeza and Tebogo Langerman.

Whereas Laffor has already teamed up with his new teammates, Langerman will only move to the Brazilians at the end of the season.

The arrival of Cale and Khenyeza, who have remained on the periphery at Sundowns, will be expected to strengthen United's resolve for the league title challenge, after they lost their grip at the top towards the festive break.

The quartet, however, is the latest on the growing list of players who have donned the colours of both teams over the decade, during which both clubs won five league titles between them.

Among the notables on the list are Katlego Mphela, Andre Arendse, Calvin Marlin, Lungisani Ndlela, Siboniso Gaxa and Elias Pelembe, who switched from United to neighbours Sundowns in recent seasons.

Both Khenyeza and Cale, who have had rare appearances, mostly off the bench under Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens, join the list containing the likes of Themba Mnguni, Brent Carelse, Japie Motale, David Kannemeyer, Lerato Chabangu and Innocent Mpangase.

The trio of Teko Modise, Hlompho Kekana and Dennis Onyango are among the few who have played for both sides in the PSL's history.

Elsewhere, Mduduzi Nyanda's loan spell has been extended at Platinum Stars, while defender Tshifhiwa Mmboi has joined his former side Dynamos on loan until the end of the season.

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the acquisition of Zimbabwean striker Brian Abbas Amidu, and SuperSport are understood to be courting Pirates midfielder Sameegh Doutie.
