Migdett endorses Marikana inquiry
MINERAL Resources Minister Susan Shabangu met the principals of the Mining Growth, Development and Employment Task Team (Migdett) to evaluate progress, her department said on Friday.
At her meeting with Migdett, which comprises representatives of the government, labour and business, held on Thursday, it was agreed to strengthen and streamline programmes for next year.
"The principals reiterated their confidence in, and support for the Marikana Commission of Inquiry headed by Judge Ian Farlam," the department said.
"The meeting agrees and supports the establishment of a mining-specific commission of inquiry."
President Jacob Zuma established the inquiry to determine why police shot and killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 on August 16 in Marikana, North West.
The department said concerned parties commended the mine health and safety inspectorate for its work towards achieving no injuries or fatalities in the sector.
