Terry new Hepburn
Speaking to Sunday World yesterday, actress Terry Pheto, who has set tongues wagging by appearing on the front cover of glam mag Marie Claire, said she was honoured to be compared to that first-rate actress of a bygone era, Audrey Hepburn.
"I wasn't aware that people compared me to Hepburn. But I have to say it's an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as her. No, I don't see it as a burden at all.
"I see it as challenge and I'm inspired to work harder and will hopefully one day leave a legacy like her," she said.
Pheto's cover and fashion spread was inspired by the September 1956 Marie Claire cover, which featured Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
And the current editor of the mag, Aspasia Karras, had said she'd selected Pheto to be on the June cover because she saw similarities between her and Hepburn.
"Who better to play Hepburn than Terry Pheto? She's beautiful, elegant, ladylike. She's got the star quality and that's what I was looking for," Karras had said.
The cover was shot in March in Paris, after Pheto was invited by world-acclaimed fashion house Louis Vuitton to its fashion show during the Paris Fashion Week. The second photo-shoot, which was eventually preferred for the cover, was in Joburg.
"I was ecstatic when I received the call. I'm a huge fan of both the mag and the fashion house. So when I got a call that Louis Vuitton was inviting me to their show in Paris and that they'd be dressing me for my cover shoot, I was beyond happy. It was a dream come true for me," she said.
Associates have been vocal about their admiration for the notable cover.
When the mag hit the shelves, Thula Sindi, a fashion-designer close to Pheto tweeted: "Best June cover has to go to Marie Claire. Terry Pheto looks beautiful & classy."
Louis Vitton expressed their delight, tweeting: "Pheto looks beautiful and classy. Wearing #LouisVuitton."
Fellow actor Wandile Molebatsi seemed to answer the question on everyone's lips when he congratulated her: "Love the cover. I can't wait for your movie."
Pheto says she is focused on The Bold and the Beautiful for the year, but she has a number of Hollywood scripts in her in-tray.
"I try to use my time in LA wisely. Between classes, workshops and meetings, I always make time to read scripts and search for a project that will challenge me as an actor and take my career to the next level," she said.
Pheto is in the country and will attend the mag's shindig on Tuesday.
