Kunene's bucks are slipping away

CONTROVERSIAL businessman Kenny Kunene's empire is crumbling in the same way that tons of bricks come crashing down as a high rise building is being demolished.

His ZAR nightclub will be moving out of Radisson Blu Gautrain hotel, where he is living, by the end of next month and now his offices in Sandton, north of Jozi, are to let.

Sunday World has been reliably told that Kunene is no longer running his business at Regus business centre in Sandton's upmarket Nelson Mandela Square.

Sources close to Kunene say the man dubbed "the Sushi King" no longer comes to his offices.

On Friday, a woman from Regus, who asked not be named, told Sunday World it was true that Kunene and his company had vacated the premises.

When contacted, Kunene said: "I don't want to say anything. You can write any rubbish you want. I don't want to talk to you. You are conspiring against me."

Then he cut us off.

The Regus woman adds: "They are going to remove their furniture over the weekend. They are no longer running their business [from] here. It looks like things are tough for them lately and that's why they are leaving."

Another source says the problem that led Kunene to close ZAR nightclub in Sandton was that there were issues around the noise caused by his patrons at the hotel and the expensive rent they were paying.

A close friend of Kunene's says he claimed to be moving ZAR to a new location so as to expand his business, but that was a lie.

"The club is no longer attracting top executives and celebrities. It is now being frequented by rude young people who misbehave when drunk," says Kunene's confidante.

The friend says the sushi king decided to put a spin on the matter of leaving Sandton hotel by writing on his website, Zaronline, that they were looking for a new place.

"It's all lies and they know exactly why they are leaving," says Kunene's associate.

One person known as Lionel wrote on Kunene's website: "Lies, you ran out of money and you closed down. It's showbiz, happens everywhere. Own up."

Another user says: "KK is broke, rent is too expensive. Smart move to downgrade.

"However most clubs that relocate never manage to capture the same ambience and vibe, they end up being shadows of their former selves."

@ swona. I HATE haters like you, broke foke always seem to hate on rich foke.
look if you are broke and bitter about life, please do not take it out on those who don’t stand for what you do.
Kk has money, and he isn’t afraid to show it, and if you have a problem with that, direct your energy elsewhere. Whether he is going through, be it alit cash flow or just making a well needed business decision, down is not where he is going. Bank on that.
You hating on him won’t have a hand in breaking him, and if anything, I hope it makes him stronger.

Herein is the problem. People with a worldview that the shallow arrogance of flaunting your money is a thing to be applauding.

He ran a ponzi scheme (get rick quick) to make some moola which is why he went to jail. I suspect he is going to try again to rake in some money through a ponzi scheme.

If it's true he is broke, I think he needs to sit down, think and plan again; he can still do it.
But I don't like his arrogance, I think he needs a proper financial planning...

Too little too late, don't you think???People like KK do nothing for the destitute, for them showing off is the order of the day. It is his money and frankly, I don't care wherther he is rich or bankrupt beacause he does not add value to the problems the poor people encounter everyday.
