All the more to stun you with
ELIMINATED Diamond In The Ruff full-figured contestant Bulelwa Lukhozi has broken the "fat don't sell" perception in the modelling industry by becoming the first competitor from the modelling talent search TV show to land a modelling job.
She doesn't give details.
She was eliminated in the swimsuit challenge, in which contestants did a photo shoot outside the safety of the studio.
They had to brave the streets and model swim wear in public.
"With the crowds staring, a few struggled, being self-conscious. Others managed to ignore the gawking passers-by and gave a knock-out performance," says Marang Setshoaelo, the show's executive producer.
Lukhozi impressed the judges by holding her own, but Nicole Dixin took the glory.
Speaking of her first modelling experience, Lukhozi says: "Oh my word! It was nerve wracking!
"I was the only plus-size model there. Other girls were ramp models, but the lessons at Diamond in The Ruff came in handy. For instance, when they asked me for a pair of stilettos, I had them. They were impressed."
One of these lessons was that of keeping fit.
"The issue with fuller figured people is that we don't tone up.
"There's nothing wrong with being fuller figured if you are firm and have good blood circulation. As I'm talking to you I'm leaving the gym and, gosh, is it sore!"
Setshoaelo is chuffed with developments and hopes more fuller figured models will enter the competition next time.
"We suspect that the first time round the fuller-figured candidates who really had a shot at the competition didn't really take it seriously because most of the women who auditioned were slim-size candidates, despite the fact that we marketed very aggressively to include plus-size," she says.
"It's our hope that Bulelwa and Nicole's success will spur on more plus-size candidates to enter in season two."
Lukhozi is reading for her BA Communication Science through Unisa. She wants to be an actress.
