Stud duo for Queen

THE 20-million viewers of Generations, by far the biggest programme on TV in the last few years, will be treated to a refreshing change in Queen Moroka's character.

Soaphie's character to get a double dose of love

The diva extraordinaire will in upcoming episodes of the nightly soapie have an immensely arresting storyline indeed.

Just a few weeks ago Queen, played by actress Sophie Harrington, formerly Ndaba, was poking her nose into everyone else's business and was bereft of love.

Now - hey presto! - she has two love affairs, though she desires one suitor and rejects the other.

Harrington - who ditched the name Ndaba last December when she surprised her guests and the media by marrying Bishop Keith Harrington in a surprise and breathlessly exquisite wedding - plays Queen.

The character's emotions will be torn asunder by two competing bulls: desirably dashing bachelor Lungile (Buyile Mdladla) and the drearily utilitarian Jabulani (Nyembezi Kunene).

Queen moves into the centre of the storyline - after being shunted to the sidelines as a classical, cartoonish receptionist - in the midst of an exodus of established first-rate talent.

"Obviously, it's exciting for me to come into the central role. But you'll understand that with the recent departure of talents long associated with Generations, the creative department had to come up with a storyline to suit Queen.

"You've got to understand that in a soapie, unlike in drama or in a feature movie, you can't have seven storylines running simultaneously.

"What I think is now interesting for viewers is that Queen, who just a few weeks ago had no lovers and was poking her nose into everybody's else affairs, suddenly has two lovers.

"In a way that mirrors reality. Often when people haven't dated for a long time, when they do start suddenly there's a lot of interest in them from others," says Sophie, who returned from her honeymoon on Friday.

She declines to reveal where she and her new hubby went.

"It's a secret. In a world where secrets are diminishing, I think my honeymoon will remain my secret thing," she says.

Morula Pictures, which produces Generations, is yet to comment on whether Queen will move from being a receptionist to an executive, perhaps through a hostile takeover of Sibusiso Dlomo's Ezweni Media.

In real life receptionists have been known to move up the corporate ladder - such as famed 1990s Drum editor Liz Khumalo and agony aunt Sis Dolly.
