A R1,7m affair - Minister Gigaba sued over married woman
ANOTHER sitting cabinet minister and former ANC Youth League president is embroiled in a messy extra-marital affair controversy.
Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba, an ANC deployee in Mpumalanga, apparently mixed his ANC party work with carnal pleasures in the province's capital Nelspruit.
And this time the figure bandied around for "reparations" is way more than the measly R40,000 reported in Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula's saga.
He is facing a massive R1,7m suit from an aggrieved civil servant, who claims the minister wrecked his marriage.
Luka Sandhlane is demanding the payment after Gigaba allegedly admitted to having had an affair with his now estranged wife Gugu Nkosi. Sandhlane and Gugu have two children together.
Sunday World can today reveal that Gigaba has accepted responsibility for his actions and has apologised to Sandhlane for "his improper sexual conduct".
Gigaba also admitted to his current partner, Noma Mngoma, that he was secretly meeting Nkosi while in Nelspruit.
In a frantic attempt to do damage control, Gigaba has dispatched a senior aide, Makhosini Nkosi, to negotiate with Sandhlane.
"Makhosini apologised on behalf of Malusi before Sandhlane could confront him," says our source.
We are told the shattered hubby accepted the apology and has withdrawn the divorce proceedings, which were due to begin two weeks ago.
Friends of the couple say Sandhlane was shuttered when he discovered Gigaba had been bonking his wife.
They tell Sunday World he had thought Gigaba was his friend and comrade.
Sources say Gigaba and Gugu (described as a daring Mpumalanga tenderpreneur), were seeing each other for several months before their affair was exposed.
But one of Gigaba's ANC comrades tells Sunday World Mngoma was the first to discover the affair.
And that Gigaba decided to terminate "the inappropriate relationship" even before the hubby found out about it.
"She (Mngoma) phoned the woman to say she must leave her man alone."
Gigaba has just recently introduced Mngoma to the public - at his 40th birthday celebration in Sandton last month.
"The two had a serious argument," says the source.
Our informants say Sandhlane discovered the relationship through SMSes on his wife's cellphone.
"And when Luka saw the SMSes from Gigaba, he took the cellphone and left the house. When she realised he had left with her cellphone, she packed her bags and left - leaving her husband with their two children," says the source.
Other sources tell Sunday World that Gugu told her close friends that Gigaba had promised to marry her.
But after Gigaba apologised to Sandhlane and called off the relationship, she allegedly got upset and started threatening Gigaba.
Sandhlane refused to comment fully, but sent us an SMS saying: "I will appreciate if we can let the court deal with whatever matter for the sake of my kids, parents and family."
One of Gigaba's friends says the minister takes full responsibility for his indiscretion and regrets it.
Gugu declines to comment on the matter.
Makhosini Nkosi says Gigaba's "private life is not public life and we will not confirm or deny a matter in which private individuals are involved, with no public interest at stake".
Last year Gigaba was involved in a nasty legal battle with his ex-wife Thabang, which ended up in court after allegations and counter allegations of abuse.
She accused him of emotional, financial and psychological abuse.
Thabang also complained to the police that Gigaba was sending her nasty SMSes.
Gigaba countered her allegation by opening a case of kidnapping against her cousin Lwazi Ngidi, claiming she had kidnapped his 10-year-old daughter.
This after Thabong had left their daughter with Ngidi when she was on duty in Cuba.
Three years ago Gigaba was rapped over the knuckles by the government for spending more than R1000 of taxpayers money on flowers for Thabong.
