The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has started a project called “Green Goal 2010” to coincide with the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
The initiative aims to allow people to enjoy the World Cup, while taking care of the environment.
In addition, participants will leave an ecological legacy after the event, as the event leaves an infrastructural legacy.
Elana Keel, in the municipality’s environment management department, says the local authority has done its part in trying to keep a safe and clean environment during and after the soccer spectacle.
“At the stadium, you will be able to separate your waste into dry waste and wet waste. The lights will go on as you walk into a room and will switch off when you walk out. In the bathrooms, a number of water saving devices have been fitted,” Keel says.
