When my political sidekick passed on the invite to attend the ruling party’s birthday celebration, I asked myself if this was really how I needed to start my festive activities. By attending the ANC’s 98th birthday party?
I hope in two years’ time it’ll be relevant to attend the centenary celebrations.
I accepted but – boy! – did I not party.
Never mind partying. It was my first time I’d rubbed shoulders with real A-listers – not the usual Kwela Tebza, Nonhle Thema, Speedy, Bonang, Jub Jub, Somizi, 3Sum and suchlike.
The MC, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, did a sterling job. She commanded the stage like Mama Action in a movie called Kuyasheshwa (the Gauteng slogan for service delivery).
I must admit you’re hot.
When Jacob Zuma marries Bongi Ngema next January you absolutely must walk down the aisle with moi.
I was a groupie for a change. Spent the night trying to match faces with political names.
Didn’t know most of our leaders could be so humble and down to earth.
That’s if you are not interviewing them!
The only notable faces from our usual crowd were ANC cheerleader Chomee with her ever-smiling manager Arthur Mafokate.
You should have seen the excitement in the hall when Chomee took to the stage.
It’s refreshing to see Chomee managing to perform at both gala dinners for A-listers and still be able to charm nabomageza empompini (taxi drivers).
Didn’t know mining mogul and Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe was such a huge fan of pop music.
Even ol’ Tokyo Sexwale got down and boogied up a storm to the diva’s sexy music.
Baleka Mbete and Zuma had the likes of Safa’s Kirsten Nematandani and Free State premier Ace Magashule green with envy in the dance stakes.
Oh, and Arthur, Shwashwi is jealous; you seem to know every politician in the country.
Loved your dress code – it is good to see your transformation from kwaito father to media businessman.
Bravo!
