Just hours after axed Mbombela municipal manager Jacob Dladla allegedly transferred R43m into Lefika Emerging Equity’s bank account, the company’s CEO Chris Grib was already plotting to skip the country for Dubai.
Our investigations established that at the time of the payment, authorised by Dladla on December 22, 2007, not a single task had been completed by Lefika.
Lefika, owned by Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung and businessman Herbert Theledi, had been contracted by the municipality to build the R1bn Fifa 2010 World Cup Mbombela Stadium.
Former Mbombela municipal speaker Jimmy Mohlala blew the whistle on the corruption.
He was gunned down in January last year – and nobody has been arrested for his murder.
The municipality commissioned an investigation by Ngobe-Nkosi attorneys, and another by Kruger-Mketsi Inc, both of whom confirmed Mohlala’s allegations.
Lefika went to the Johannesburg High Court to seek a court interdict preventing the findings of Ngobe-Nkosi from being made public.
Dladla was later found guilty of all the charges , and it was recommended that he should “be dismissed from the employ of the municipality”.
But the ANC in the province is pushing for the municipality to give him a golden handshake.
