The thin line between metrosexual and gay

Hey, we need to shy away from being untidy and looking shady

Eight black diamonds (4 dudes and 4 gals) share their views on the metrosexual man’s habits - and if they appreciate this modern man as much as he appreciates himself.

THE GENTS

Name: Eric Kola

Age: 30

What is your take on grooming for men? (Facials, manicures etc)

I think it’s about time we as men take good care of ourselves, make effort to look good. Facials aren’t necessarily for ladies only but for people who like looking and feeling great about themselves.

Do you think there’s a thin line between the whole metrosexual look and looking gay?

Not at all - hey, we need to shy away from being untidy and looking shady

How long does it take for you to get ready in the mornings or when you are preparing to go out on a special occasion?

About an hour, depending on what I have decided to wear for that particular day or occasion.

Assuming you go for treatments. Would you like your lady to accompany you when you go for your grooming treatments?

I encourage her to go with me, she actually supports it. In the beginning I thought it’s all about her image but now I am enjoying it so much...

Name: Bafana Mabasa

Age: 31

What is your take on grooming for men? (Facials, manicures etc)

Everyone has the responsibility to look presentable at any given time, but personally I’m not into this whole grooming thing and I don’t see myself going for a facial or manicure in my lifetime.

Do you think there’s a thin line between the whole metrosexual look and looking gay?

Not necessarily I think one can be groomed and still be all men and masculine, eish…… but putting on lip gloss and polishing your nails etc borders on gay behaviour.

How long does it take for you to get ready in the mornings or when you are preparing to go out on a special occasion?

30 - 35 minutes tops

Assuming you go for treatments. Would you like your lady to accompany you when you go for your grooming treatments?

- I don’t go for treatments (I don’t know hey, I haven’t invited her to the barbershop so I guess that will be a no - LOL)...

Name: Thabiso Motshegoa

Age: 28

What is your take on grooming for men? (Facials, manicures etc)

I think for men that are really concerned about looking beautiful it’s good for them and not forgetting those that have developed careers from these assets.

Do you think there’s a thin line between the whole metrosexual look and looking gay?

I think the distinction is still there. There’s no such a thing as looking gay, one can be gay and still look raggedy [for a lack of a better word]. Can you imagine a consultant with an oily pimpled face telling a crowd about the importance of looks? However there’s a thin line between metro sexuality and femininity and feminine dudes have always been in our midst. The term, ’metro sexual’ is just a word referring to something very old.

How long does it take for you to get ready in the mornings or when you are preparing to go out on a special occasion?

1 hr from jumping off the bed and getting into the car (I still have plenty time to watch the morning news and eat breakfast).

Assuming you go for treatments. Would you like your lady to accompany you when you go for your grooming treatments?

- The only time I went for such was when I took my woman to a full day spa on our anniversary. Would I go there with my boys like the group of men [African] I saw, the answer is no. Not because we’re afraid to explore, but because it was not psyched from early age. Over the weekend I saw men with sunscreens at the Soweto marathon and my first reaction was that of "ba iketsa makgowa" until my intellect argued that the sun radiates very harmful ultraviolet rays and smearing a smelly white stuff on ones face can prevent diseases like cancer even though our fathers have worked in the sun for years without being diagnosed with such fancy diseases.

Name: Gift Luthuli

What is your take on grooming for men? (Facials, manicures etc)

I believe it’s good for a man to look good and take good care of himself i.e. Have a certain type of class or style about him, be clean and smell good. Facials, manicures etc are a fairly new concept as opposed to our conventional grooming methods and therefore I don’t have anything against them.

Do you think there’s a thin line between the whole metrosexual look and looking gay?

My understanding of metro sexuality is about the way you groom yourself and not necessarily your dress sense, what I’m trying to say is that one can look gay because of the way they dress and not be classified as a metro sexual and vice versa i.e. one can look stylish and well groomed and not be perceived as gay.

How long does it take for you to get ready in the mornings or when you are preparing to go out on a special occasion?

From bathing to fully dressed, I would say about 45 minutes to an hour.

Assuming you go for treatments. Would you like your lady to accompany you when you go for your grooming treatments?

I would certainly like my lady to accompany me.
