Don't leave those behind

HOW many times, after considering numerous items, some with sentimental value, do we make a promise to ourselves to make a check-list of all the items most likely to be left behind?

The inconvenience of forgetting something is an added nuisance among the hiccups of travel, so rather do the checklist than remember after you have checked out of your room.

Write the list out. Better still, cut out this article before leaving behind the electric toothbrush you've used only a few times.

Here's a list of items to check before closing the door behind you:

  • Phone and laptop chargers: because we use these so much, especially on holiday, these are the leaders of the staying pack. They go silent as we rummage through the room, so make them the first items to pack.
  • Toothbrush: the more expensive the more likely it is to stay behind, looking at itself in the bathroom mirror.
  • Sunglasses: probably your newest and most expensive find, but they have been known to sleep soundly as their owner prepares for the trip. They are also remembered with panic because they're like second eyes on a blazing, hot day.
  • Make-up: you can blame the hotel staff or anyone who was in the room because others pack make-up away like they would weapons. Also, because we spend so much holiday time preening ourselves, except on the day we hit the road, make-up has been known to give us the slip.
  • Binoculars and cameras belong in a league of their own because of the way they change owners and end up in the lost and found box, never to re-emerge. Don't give these to the kids as they are most likely to break or lose them come departure day.
  • House keys: these disappear for the simple reason that they are the most crucial items on this list. Leave a duplicate set in a secret place before you leave the house. If you still have your keys with you when you leave your holiday place, put them at the bottom of your handbag.
  • Underwear and pyjamas: these get left behind a lot because of irregular night temperatures and because beds are hardly ever made on the day of departure.
  • Turn the bed upside down and inside out and find that sexy number before you regret losing it.

How true hey. I can so relate. My partner and I lost both our tooth brushes and underwear. Pity I only read this article too late
